Phoebe
Paul’s commendation of Phoebe is a clear statement of how he felt about women who are spiritually minded and put the kingdom of God first. It was never his goal to put women down as some have charged (see Romans 16:1,2).
Phoebe, he tells us, was a dedicated “servant” who ministered in the church at Cenchrea. This is the word Jesus used when he described greatness in the kingdom of God. It is not positions of power, but looking to serve the needs of others (Matt 20:20-28; Phil 2:2-5).
The apostle also saw her as a woman “worthy” to be received by the saints. She, he says, measured up to the standard of saints: holy brethren who set their minds on the things of God, separate themselves from the world, and devote themselves to heavenly matters.
Paul also saw in this godly woman a disciple who was devoted not only to helping other disciples but to helping Paul himself in his work as a minister of the new covenant. She was clearly watchful and alert – looking out for brothers and sisters who could not meet all their needs. from front page It is easy for any of us to get busy with life and ignore needs of others, but Phoebe, as Priscilla, saw what was really important and did it. The two are worthy to be emulated. –L.A. Stauffer
